CHECKLIST · SCENARIO 2 OF 3

The executor's first 30 days

If you're holding this list, you're likely doing something hard while grieving. There is no need to rush every account at once — a few things are time-sensitive, and most can wait. Here is a calm order of operations.

This week

  1. Get several certified copies of the death certificate. Almost every platform, bank, and carrier will ask for one — copies save weeks of back-and-forth.
  2. Secure the phone and its number. The mobile line receives login and two-factor codes. Keep it active for now; don't cancel it in the first days. See the carrier guides.
  3. Find the plan, if there is one. A password manager with emergency access, a Google Inactive Account Manager, an Apple Legacy Contact, or a written note. These are the fastest routes in.
  4. Stop money leaving. Notify banks and card issuers; list recurring subscriptions to cancel so charges stop.

This month

  1. Notify the big platforms with documentation. Each has its own deceased-user process — start from the platform guides and use the official link on each page.
  2. Decide social media, unhurried. Memorialize or remove — there is no wrong choice, and it can wait until you're ready.
  3. Handle financial and store accounts. PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, and exchange balances belong to the estate; note anything held in crypto or store credit.
  4. Keep a simple log. Which accounts you've contacted, when, and what they asked for. It prevents doing the same call twice.

Each platform's exact process lives on its own guide here, linked to the company's official help page. General information, not legal advice.
